What Is Gold Vermeil? The Legal Definition and What It Costs

Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a gold layer at least 2.5 microns thick. Here is what the FTC rule means, how it compares to plated and gold filled, and what it costs.

What is gold vermeil? It is sterling silver with a layer of real gold on top (say "ver-may"). In the United States it is not just a style word: the FTC's Jewelry Guides set a minimum. To be called vermeil, a piece must be sterling silver coated with gold of at least 10 karat, at least 2.5 microns thick.

That makes vermeil a middle option between thin gold plating and solid gold. Below is what the rule actually says, how vermeil compares with gold plated and gold filled jewelry, and what it cost at a retailer that sells the same designs in silver, vermeil and solid gold.

The definition is in section 23.4 of the FTC Jewelry Guides. A product may be marked or described as vermeil if it has three things:

  1. A base of sterling silver. Sterling means at least 925 parts per thousand pure silver, under section 23.5.
  2. Gold of at least 10 karat, coated or plated on all significant surfaces, "of reasonable durability."
  3. A minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold. The Guides give that as approximately 100 millionths of an inch.

The Guides add one more condition. If the silver is first covered with a base metal such as nickel and then gold plated, the seller must disclose that layer. Calling it plain vermeil without that disclosure is, in the FTC's words, unfair or deceptive.

The detail most guides miss: "of fine gold"

The 2.5 microns is measured as fine gold, meaning 24 karat. The Guides explain the conversion in a footnote: one micron of 12 karat gold counts as half a micron of 24 karat gold.

So the lower the karat of the coating, the thicker it has to be. By the same arithmetic:

Coating karatGold contentThickness needed to equal 2.5 microns of fine gold
24k100%2.5 microns
18k75%about 3.3 microns
14k58.3%about 4.3 microns
10k41.7%6 microns

That is why a listing that says "2.5 microns of 14k gold" falls short of the standard on its own numbers. The coating has to hold the gold equivalent of 2.5 microns of pure gold.

Gold vermeil vs gold plated vs gold filled

All three are a gold layer over another metal, and all three are defined in the same FTC Guides (section 23.3 for plated and filled). They differ in the base metal and in how much gold they need.

LabelMetal underneathGold layer, at minimum
Gold vermeilSterling silver only10k or higher, 2.5 microns of fine gold equivalent
Gold plated (electroplated)Any metal10k or higher, 0.175 microns of fine gold equivalent

Gold filledAny metal10k or higher, at least 1/20 of the total metal weight
Solid gold (14k, for example)None: the gold alloy is the whole piece58.3% gold all the way through

Three things stand out.

Vermeil needs about 14 times as much gold thickness as gold plating. The plating minimum is 0.175 microns, or roughly seven millionths of an inch; vermeil's is 2.5. A piece sold as "gold plated" can legally carry a very thin layer.

Vermeil and heavy gold electroplate share a thickness minimum. The difference is what sits underneath: vermeil is always sterling silver, while heavy gold electroplate can be brass or another base metal.

Gold filled is measured by weight, not thickness. The gold has to be at least one twentieth of the weight of all the metal in the piece, and it is bonded mechanically rather than electroplated. A lighter version, at least 1/40 by weight, may be sold as rolled gold plate, with the fraction stated.

None of the layered options is solid gold. If the piece is solid gold, the karat applies to the whole piece; our guide to 14k vs 18k gold covers what those karats mean and cost.

Gold filled vs gold plated

These two are easy to confuse, because the same FTC section covers both and "gold plated" can mean two different things.

How it must be labeledWith the karat first, as prominently as the termWith the karat first, as prominently as the term

Two practical points follow from the rule. First, gold filled is defined by weight, so the heavier the piece, the more gold it must carry, and it needs twice the gold share of mechanically bonded plating (1/20 against 1/40). Electroplating is defined by thickness instead, which does not grow with the size of the piece. Second, a label that says only "gold plated" does not tell you which kind of plating it is, or how thick; the Guides say a heavier electroplate of at least 2.5 microns may be called "heavy gold electroplate," and the "rolled gold plate" and "gold overlay" labels must state the fraction of the weight, such as 1/40. If a listing gives none of that, ask.

What gold vermeil costs, measured

The fairest way to price vermeil is to compare the same design in different metals from one seller. Capucinne sells a handful of designs in sterling silver, gold vermeil and solid 14k and 18k gold, so on 15 October 2026 we recorded every metal option from the store's own listings.

DesignSterling silverYellow gold vermeil14k gold18k gold
Kamari Pearl 2 Ring Set$560$580$1,140$1,360
Capucinne Logo Stud Earrings$220$250not offerednot offered
Minimalist Initial Necklacenot offered$260$600$700
Baby Name Necklacenot offered$310$800$950

Vermeil cost little more than plain silver: $20 more on the ring set and $30 more on the earrings. Solid 14k gold cost 2 to 2.6 times the vermeil price on the same design. On the ring set, which also has a pearl and a diamond, 14k gold was $560 more than vermeil.

Two smaller findings. Rose gold vermeil was priced higher than yellow on two designs ($610 against $580 on the ring set, $290 against $260 on the initial necklace), while 14k white, yellow and rose gold were one price. And Capucinne does not state its vermeil thickness on its product listings, FAQ page or care page. Calling it vermeil implies the FTC minimum, but the store does not give a number.

Gold plated sterling silver is not vermeil

Plenty of jewelry is gold plated sterling silver, sold without the word vermeil. That is the honest label when the seller does not guarantee the vermeil thickness: the silver base is the same, but the gold layer may be much thinner.

Hey Happiness, a German jewelry brand (run by Sparkle GmbH) that ships to the US, is an example. It sells sterling silver pieces in 18k gold plated, rose gold plated and plain silver versions, and describes them as gold plated, not vermeil. We found no plating thickness on its listings. On one necklace, the gold plated and plain silver versions were the same price.

How long does gold vermeil last?

The FTC sets no lifespan, only that the coating be "of reasonable durability." What the rule does tell you is that thickness is what you are paying for. A thicker layer has more gold to lose before the silver shows through, so a 2.5 micron layer will outlast a 0.175 micron one under the same wear.

Where you wear it matters too. A ring rubs against almost everything your hand touches; a pendant mostly does not. Polishing removes a little metal each time, so treat vermeil gently and skip abrasive polishes. Where the gold does wear through, the sterling silver underneath can tarnish; our guide to whether sterling silver tarnishes explains why and how to slow it.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • "Is this vermeil, and how many microns is the gold?" A seller who meets the standard should be able to say. Remember the figure is measured as fine gold.
  • "What karat is the gold layer?" It must be at least 10k. A higher karat means a richer color but needs more thickness to meet the standard.
  • "Is there a nickel layer under the gold?" If there is, the FTC Guides require the seller to say so. This matters to anyone who reacts to nickel.
  • "What is it priced against?" If the vermeil and plain silver versions cost nearly the same, as at Capucinne, the gold layer is a small part of the price. If you want gold that will not wear off, compare the solid 14k price.

Is gold vermeil worth it?

Vermeil is worth it for gold-colored jewelry you want to own without paying for solid gold: earrings, pendants, pieces you wear sometimes rather than every day. At Capucinne it cost a fraction of the 14k price.

Choose solid gold for a ring you will wear every day for years, like an engagement ring or wedding band. A coating will wear on a ring, while the color of solid yellow or rose gold goes all the way through. If budget is the reason for considering vermeil for an engagement ring, our guide to engagement rings under $5,000 shows where solid gold fits in a real budget.

Skip "gold plated" with no thickness stated if you want the piece to last. It can be legal with a layer far thinner than vermeil.

How we researched this

We read the definitions of vermeil, gold plate, gold filled and sterling silver directly from the FTC Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR Part 23) on the eCFR on 15 October 2026. The coating thickness table is arithmetic from the Guides' own fine-gold footnote. On the same day we recorded the metal options and prices of every Capucinne design listed in gold vermeil, and the US dollar prices of three Hey Happiness gold plated pieces, from each store's own product listings. The full data is in our research notes.

Common questions

What is gold vermeil?+

Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, vermeil is sterling silver coated or plated on all significant surfaces with gold of at least 10 karat, with a minimum thickness equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold. A seller should not call a piece vermeil unless it meets that standard.

Is gold vermeil real gold?+

The outer layer is real gold of at least 10 karat. Underneath is sterling silver, so a vermeil piece is mostly silver by weight and is not solid gold.

What is the difference between gold vermeil and gold plated?+

Two things: the base metal and the thickness. Gold plated jewelry can be any metal underneath, and electroplating can be as thin as 0.175 microns of fine gold. Vermeil must be sterling silver underneath, with at least 2.5 microns, about 14 times the plating minimum.

Is gold vermeil better than gold filled?+

They are measured differently. Gold filled must have gold making up at least one twentieth of the total metal weight, on any base metal. Vermeil is measured by thickness and must sit on sterling silver. Neither is solid gold. Compare the specific piece: ask for the micron thickness of vermeil, or the weight fraction of gold filled.

What is the difference between gold filled and gold plated?+

Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, gold filled means a layer of gold alloy of at least 10 karat, bonded to the base metal by mechanical means such as soldering or welding, that makes up at least one twentieth of the weight of all the metal in the piece. Gold plated is a lower bar: either a mechanically bonded layer of at least one fortieth of the weight, or an electroplated layer at least 0.175 microns thick (measured as fine gold). Both must state the karat of the gold before the term.

How much does gold vermeil cost compared with solid gold?+

At Capucinne on 15 October 2026, the same designs cost $20 to $30 more in yellow gold vermeil than in plain sterling silver, and 2 to 2.6 times the vermeil price in solid 14k gold. A pearl ring set was $560 in silver, $580 in vermeil and $1,140 in 14k gold.

Does gold vermeil wear off?+

It can. Vermeil is a surface layer, so wear and polishing remove gold over time, and once it wears through you see the silver underneath. A thicker layer lasts longer, which is why the micron figure matters. The FTC requires the coating to be of reasonable durability but sets no lifespan.
